About Us
Mark Carr
Mark Carr serves in communications and government affairs at AEP MEMCO LLC, a barge freight company in St Louis. Mark’s background is in education and communications. He is very active in the community, serving on the boards of The Green Center, Friends of the Illinois River, and the Business Marketing Association-St Louis. Together with a team of writers, designers, and illustrators, he developed the curriculum “RiverWorks Discovery: A Journey of Exploration and Imagination on America’s Waterways”. Mark and his family live in Edwardsville, IL, a suburb of St. Louis.
Matt Feier
Matt Feier joined the Board in 2006 to assist with the organization's programming and fundraising efforts. In addition, he is part of the work group established to develop a landscape management plan for the Center’s outdoor learning spaces, an effort undertaken in coordination with the City of University City. He holds an M.S. in Environmental Policy and Natural Resources Management from the University of Denver, and an undergraduate degree in Environmental Conservation and English from the University of New Hampshire. His current academic interests include learning how to better manage natural landscapes where they interface with urban and suburban developments. Matt spent eight years working for the U.S. Forest Service in both central Colorado and Alaska. While he will use any excuse to get outside and exercise, Matt is an avid cyclist and hiker who also enjoys paddling.
Linda Fried
Linda Fried first joined the Board as a founding member in 1997. She has a Masters in Teaching (MAT) with, among other areas, certification in special education, reading and biology. She taught in a variety of public school settings, but spent most of her time teaching science in both a GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) program and a sixth grade center. After retiring from public education in 1991, Linda completed a Masters degree in Conservation Biology from the University of Missouri in St. Louis. Since that time, she has worked as a volunteer in a variety of capacities, both at The Green Center and U City in Bloom.
Peg Kaltenthaler
Nancy Klepper
Nancy joined the Board of The Green Center in 2008, having chaired the Education Committee since 2007. In that role, she provides administrative support to our Education staff, as well as practical assistance teaching Field Experiences in our Outdoor Classroom. Nancy has lived most of her life in University City, though work and travel have taken her to Switzerland, Australia, Sri Lanka, Zambia, England, New Zealand, and China. Before retiring, she worked in the fields of education, public health, and community development. Actively involved in the community, she also serves on the boards of Project Cope, a transitional housing and support agency for newly released prisoners, and Paraquad, an organization dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities lead independent lives. Prior to her work with The Green Center, Nancy served on the boards of Family Care Health Centers, La Clinica, Bicycleworks, AHEC, Latino Youth Advisory Committee, Language Access Metro Project, the College School, the Refugee Consortium, and Prison Performing Arts. Nancy and her husband, Bob, live in the Loop area in University City, not far from where she grew up in the 1940's.
Irv Logan
Vice President
Irv, who has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications, was one of the original founders of The Green Center, and has served multiple terms in several leadership positions on the Board, most recently as Vice President. He was a Community Specialist for the Missouri Department of Conservation from which he recently retired after a 22-year career of exemplary public service. Some of his many accomplishments include co-founding Gateway Greening and the Earthways Center for Resource Efficiency (both divisions of the Missouri Botanical Garden); the later attracts visitors from across the nation who are interested in studying the principles of sustainable development. Irv has also hosted a television program designed to educate our community about important conservation issues. He became involved with The Green Center when he set up an outdoor classroom in Ruth Park Woods for students in the U City School District.
Jane Schaefer
Secretary
Jane Schaefer grew up in Minnesota and moved to St Louis after college. She has followed her love of science, nature, and the outdoors throughout her life. She studied computer science and is the owner of Schaefer Software Services, a computer consulting and training company. In 1985 she was one of the founders of U City in Bloom, a volunteer organization which plants and maintains hundreds of flowerbeds throughout University City. She is one of the founders of The Green Center and is a board member. Her responsibilities include management of the Green Center Learning Gardens, including a prairie garden, a woodland garden, an endemic Ozark garden, and an herb garden. Her passion for native plants has led to her study of ecology and botany.
Ted Slap
Treasurer
Ted Slap is a volunteer outings leader and wilderness skills instructor for the Sierra Club, and has served as Treasurer of their Wilderness Training Committee. In 2008, Ted was appointed by Mayor John Nations to serve a two year term on the Chesterfield Missouri, Citizens Committee for the Environment. He relocated to St Louis from Los Angeles in 2007 to become the Director of Financial Analysis & Reporting for Viasystems Inc., a global electronics manufacturer headquartered in Clayton, MO. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Management and Accounting from Tulane University. In Los Angeles, he served on the Board or other committees of several not-for-profit organizations, including MOCA Contemporaries, the young professional support council of The Museum of Contemporary Art; and Eagle Rock Athletic Association, where he was Treasurer. Ted began his professional career in public accounting with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, working in their Philadelphia, Boston and Moscow, Russia offices. In Los Angeles, Ted was a television finance executive, and worked for Dick Clark Productions in corporate accounting and production finance; and later as Vice President, Finance of the Tennis Channel. Ted is active with several local hiking and outdoors clubs, and is a member of the Ozark Trail Association.
Laura Streett
President
Laura is a native St. Louisan, having grown up near Forest Park. Her love of nature was born of countless hours spent outside as a child, climbing trees and wading in local ponds. Her academic training is in Elementary Education. Laura began volunteering at The Green Center as a Master Gardener trainee in 2006, assisting with our native plant propagation program. She continues as a volunteer in that capacity, managing our seed collection, stratification and propagation in the Center’s new greenhouse. In addition, she is a member of the Center’s Education Committee, and can be found outside leading Field Experience programs during our busy fall and spring seasons. Laura also serves on the Executive Board of Caring Solutions, an organization assisting developmentally delayed people and their families, as well as the Board of the University of Missouri-Extension. Previously, she served on a work group of The Repertory Theater of St. Louis. Laura lives in Warson Woods with her husband, John, and four children.
Jeanne Trulaske
Jeanne serves as President of the Robert J Trulaske Jr. Foundation, a new family foundation whose mission supports environmental conservation in Missouri. She regularly volunteers at St. Louis Life, a residential home for adults with disabilities. In addition, Jeanne serves on the board of directors at St. Louis Life, assisting with fundraising and development. In 2007, Jeanne graduated with honors with a B.S. in Art and second major in Art History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a member of the Wisconsin Union Directorate Art Committee, Jeanne assisted with the management of several art galleries at UW-Madison. Following graduation, Jeanne returned home to St. Louis and worked at Atrium Gallery, a local contemporary arts space. Jeanne enjoyed curating exhibitions and hosting openings at the Memorial Union Galleries and Atrium Gallery. Jeanne joined the Board of The Green Center in 2009.
Dan Washburn
Dan serves as Treasury Operations Manager for SSM Health Care in St. Louis. He joined the Board in 2008 to lend his expertise in finance and business management to our operations, and a hand to our restoration efforts. He has been active in several organizations, including the Optimist Club, United Way, and the Chamber of Commerce. Dan is a native Iowan and moved to the greater St. Louis area in 2007. He has an MBA and a BBA in Finance, both from The University of Iowa. Dan has a passion for the beauty of the natural environment, as well as its conservation, and believes the outdoors provides learning opportunities for people of all ages. Dan is also an avid bicyclist and has hiked many parks, including Rocky Mountain National Park and the Grand Teton National Park.
