The Green Center wins 2008 Master Gardener Community Outreach Award
Calvary Cemetery Prairie Update
In March of 2008, the Collaborative conducted a successful prescribed burn of the Calvary Cemetery Prairie, the first in 11 years, and a key project milestone. The Green Center, in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation, will be conducting another prescribed burn in early 2009. Between the months of January and March, when weather conditions are ideal and proper safety personnel are available, the prairie will be burned in an effort to ensure the ecosystem's long-term health.

As weather conditions must be as close to ideal as possible (65 degrees, 10 mph winds, 35% humidity), the burn date is tentatively set only 24 hours in advance. Conditions the day of determine whether a fire is actually lit. If you are interested in witnessing the historic prairie burn, please contact The Green Center to be added to our call list. As in years past, this burn will be conducted by Missouri Department of Conservation staff, and supported by local emergency response agencies.

Fire ecology knowledgably applied to the prairie landscape invigorates native plantlife, restores soil nutrients, and creates new habitat opportunities for local wildlife. As an instinctual response, any wildlife in the area at the time of the prairie burn will seek refuge in the surrounding cemetery area until the fire has burned out. Soil invertebrates flushed out by the burn typically attract small flocks of birds, such as robins, who return to the site within hours.

If you have questions concerning the upcoming prescribed burn or would like more information about the project, please contact events@thegreencenter.org or call 314-725-8314.
Educators wanting to schedule programming at the Prairie throughout the year should contact classes@thegreencenter.org, or phone the Center.
Welcome to The Green Center
We are located at 8025 Blackberry Avenue in University City, MO 63130.

For general information, call 314-725-8314.
The Green Center's headquarters house is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 6 pm. Our outdoor spaces are open from dawn to dusk.

Founded in 1998, the Green Center is a natural oasis in the heart of the St. Louis metropolitan region. The center is headquartered in a residence built in 1932 and is located in Kaufman Park, University City, Missouri.
The heart of the Green Center is its outdoor spaces which include learning and demonstration gardens on the headquarters' grounds; a half-acre prairie within a short walk of the headquarters; a half-acre Missouri wetland; the 26-acre Ruth Park Woods; and an Arboretum in University City's Heman Park.
We encourage visitors to explore the Green Center's outdoor spaces on their own or take advantage of our classes, guided field trips, summer youth camps, scout badge programs, and service learning and volunteer opportunities. Artists find inspiration here for their photography, painting, and creative writing.
Bringing the outdoors in, The Green Center now provides nature-related art exhibits by talented local artists.
